There are more canals in Amsterdam than in any other city. This is one reason why the 17th century heart of Amsterdam is called the Venice of the North. In the Dam square part of the city the traveller can amble back and forth along charming streets admiring the canals and the ornamental gables of old town houses.

Most of the sights of the city are in or near to the centre, and so the best way to get to know the place is on foot – unless you choose to cycle as the locals do. At the van Gogh museum visitors can admire the powerful brushwork of this great Dutch artist and his contemporaries. Rembrandt's "Night Watch" and many other masterpieces of the Golden Age of Dutch visual art can in turn be enjoyed at the Rijksmuseum.

Diamonds and rijsttafel
There are no designated shopping streets in Amsterdam, and instead the city's countless shops and boutiques are spread broadly but densely throughout the downtown district. Besides the more traditional souvenirs, Amsterdam is also a great place to buy delftware or even genuine diamonds.

The city centre is full of Indonesian and other Far-Eastern restaurants, and a host of other exotic culinary attractions. The Indonesia rijsttafel – literally a rice table – is so deservedly popular nowadays that it could even be called a national dish. Amsterdam is a vibrant student city with a lively nightlife. With its cafés, street performers and illuminations the Leidseplein district is a definite evening attraction for many.

Cheese and North Sea breakers
The Netherlands is such a compact country that even on a brief trip visitors often have enough time to see other regions. With a hired car or short train journey it is easy to reach such attractions as the great port city of Rotterdam, the cheese district of Gouda, the ceramics of Delft or the coastal dunes in the so-called Atlantic Region.
