Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region and a city of visual art. Mirón's gallery and the Picasso Museum are memorable places of interest. The Dali Museum in Figueras, just a day's journey from Barcelona, is dizzying in its extravagance. A stroll around Barcelona brings the visitor into contact with the imaginative buildings of Gaudi and his contemporaries representing the local modernism: a Catalan version of Art Nouveau.
La Rambla is the heart of the city
La Rambla is a broad boulevard that cuts through the city, with dozens of cafés and all manner of street entertainers. It is also the address of the old market hall: a highly popular destination for gourmets and other treasure hunters. Speaking of food, Barcelona is a gourmet's paradise. You could spend your entire visit there simply sampling the extraordinary cuisine, while leaving the sightseeing for next time around.
A city that never sleeps
For many years Barcelona has been renowned as one of Europe's main centres for clubbing and partying. The evening gets going in the cafés of the Old Town and the nightlife goes on until dawn in a dense network of clubs and discos that stretches down to the sea shore.
Golf at Costa Brava
North of Barcelona, near the French border, is the Costa Brava. Between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean is a rugged coast that has inspired both Dali and Picasso. In addition to its old towns, fishing villages, popular beaches, and secret coves, there are at least ten demanding – and rewarding - golf courses in the area.
