Brussels may be the capital city of the new Europe, but it is anything but dull and bureaucratic. In fact this is a very colourful, cheerful and exuberant destination. The Grand Place in the city centre is most attractive, and the surrounding downtown district is so compact that walking shoes are all you need. There are museums here for all interests, with specialist destinations such as the museum of cartoons and the museum of musical instruments, where you will find a saxophone room dedicated to Adolphe Sax, the Belgian inventor of this quintessential resource in the arsenal of the jazz composer.
Antiques and all things old
Brussels provides a very wide selection of antiques and works of art. Le Sablon is the district with most of the antique shops. Here you will find them on every street, with a popular antiques market at weekends in the Place du Grand Sablon.
Restaurants for every taste
Modern Brussels boasts a refined and quite international cuisine. While the most obvious and best-known restaurant complex is on Rue de Bouchers (Butcher Street), restaurateurs have opened a great many fine establishments throughout the city. This is a place where the nightlife gets off to a comparatively late start, with many venues only filling up after midnight.
An hour to Brugge, a city of canals
If you've made your way to Brussels, then it's also worthwhile taking an excursion to Brugge in the Flemish-speaking region of the country.
Brugge is one of Europe's best preserved mediaeval cities. It is comfortably dimensioned with several parks, and the canals that traverse the city give the place a very pleasant appearance. This is therefore an excellent venue to spend some time enjoying the delights of mediaeval architecture and modern cuisine.
