Florence: at the shrine of beauty
If Florence has to be summarised in a single word, then that word is renaissance. The fabulously wealthy Medicis commissioned an incredible number of magnificent palaces, churches and city squares for Florence, retaining the finest craftsmen, architects and artists of the era for this stupendous work. This is a place where names like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo turn up on almost every street corner.

Florence has become a shrine to aesthetics, where fashion and design are inseparably woven into the very fabric of the city. The most luxurious fashion houses are on the Via de’ Tornabuoni and the Via della Vigna Nuova. The Via dei Cerretan, in turn, is an excellent place to buy footwear, as the shops along this street are slightly less expensive than the Tornabuoni boutiques.

There’s more to Pisa than a leaning tower
Pisa has undeservedly been overshadowed by its famous leaning tower. This Tuscan city of nearly 100 000 residents is beautiful, peaceful and ideal for strolling around. Discover the historic city centre, the Square of Miracles, adjoined by most of the city’s finest old marble buildings. The medieval Old Town is also worth a visit with its squares and pedestrian alleyways, yellowing houses and dignified palaces.
