Madrid is a city that was made for nightbirds. It's a place where life is too short for sleeping. The evening may begin with tapas, leading on to a full dinner with all the trimmings. This is the point at which one begins to think about which bar to head for in preparation for a night of clubbing. The entertainments of this city have been so wild for so long that the local Madrileños with this lifestyle have been known for centuries as gatos (literally: cats).
Madrid is a very long way from the ocean, but sole and other marine delicacies are brought in huge quantities every day to grace the plates of the city's gourmets. Besides fish and shellfish, it is also worth sampling the delightful pork and lamb dishes of the Spanish capital.
Traditional or modern art?
While there is rather little to boast about in the history of Madrid, it more than makes up for this in visual art and cultural services. After a busy evening of entertainment it is nice to soothe the mind with artistic masterpieces. The most famous visual art centre in Madrid remains the Prado, with its extensive collection of works by the best-known Spanish artists of the classical period from el Greco to Goya. The nearby Centro Cultural Reina Sofia is similarly a must for those who prefer more modern art. Picasso's Guernica is probably the most celebrated gem in this collection.
