If you've never been to Manchester, then you don't know what you're missing. The dysfunctional reputation of this city is already long out of date. In fact Manchester is now a particularly cool place, and not just on account of its lively club life.
Even though the city still has its grimmer districts, it's pure slander to describe it as in any way ugly. It has many green areas and the architecture of the city centre is highly expressive.
Cheaper than London
Manchester is not unmanageably large, which also makes it a nice place to go shopping. The range is up to London standards, but the prices are more moderate. If you're out shopping, then it's also worthwhile heading for the Trafford Centre on the outskirts of the city. This is a huge covered shopping centre where you can shop at leisure in all weathers. It includes as many as 300 shops and dozens of restaurants.
Restaurant prices are also lower here than in the United Kingdom capital. The ethnic restaurant sector in particular offers excellent fare at very reasonable rates. Notable districts in this respect are Chinatown and the famous "curry mile" in Rusholme.
The outdoor life and soccer
If you like to get out in the open, then you should head for the Peak District national park, which is only a 20-minute train ride from Manchester Piccadilly. Obviously this is a footballing city, and everyone knows that this subject is more important than life itself to Mancunians. Whether the game interests you or not, the atmosphere at a match is well worth the price of the ticket – always assuming that you can get one.
