From the outset a word of warning is in order: There is no way to do justice to Rome in a single visit. The city's historical attractions alone are immense beyond comprehension. Wherever you happen to stop in this extraordinary place, there will just about always be some important historical monument less than twenty yards away: a building, a ruin or some other sought-after sight. Often these are even built one upon another. A thousand year-old palace may have been covered by a basilica, upon which a church was subsequently built.
The Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza Navona and other legendary sights are all without doubt worthy of a visit. The Colosseum and other attractions of the ancient city also bring history to life and fire the imagination.
Peace, traffic jams and food
Rome is a city of many faces. On the one hand, the city has a slightly unkempt appearance, but on turning a corner you can stumble across the most beautiful piazza that you have ever seen. On the other hand, the traffic jams are terrible and sometimes it can seem as though time is standing still.
Food in Rome is almost more important than life itself, at so it is important to allow plenty of time for meals in the Eternal City. This is also a place to enjoy real pizza at least once, for the sake of comparison with the poor imitation that is served by this name abroad.
All in the all, Rome should be taken at a moderate pace and enjoyed to the full as time permits. Aside from its profuse historical element, Rome is always more diverse and colourful, but also more disjointed and noisy than you think. There's obviously no point in fretting if you forgot to see or experience anything. You'll simply have to include it in your schedule for the next time around.
