The churches, palaces, castles and architecture of Vienna bear obvious witness to the fact that this city was long a centre of European power. Vienna is a place where history and the present day lice in harmony as neighbours. Hofburg, St. Stephen's Cathedral and Schönbrunn Castle are bursting with gold leaf, curlicues and royal splendour. Hundertwasserhaus and the city's other cheerful modern creations, by contrast, represent the other extreme.

Vienna lives in its cafés
There seems to be no such thing as regular coffee in Vienna, as everyone orders one or another of the extraordinary wide range of coffee specialities. It is also a firm rule to enjoy a sweet item such as a Sacher or Linzertorte at the same time. The finest and most genuine Sacher cakes will be found at such distinguished venues as the Hotel Sacher and the wonderful Demel coffeehouse.

Besides the cafés, it's a good idea to drop into a local Heuriger, as the wine bars are known. There is, indeed, a great deal more to Austrian wines than white Grüner Veltliner.

Shopping by the mile
Shoppers in Vienna can expect to do a fair bit of walking. By the time you have begun at Maria Hilferstrasse and continued through all of the shops in Kärtnerstrasse and the other boutiques in the Ring, then you will really know that you have been shopping.
